Imported From Belgium – Ann Demeulemeester and Haider Ackermann.

UPDATE: Additional 40% off discounts have just been announced.

This week Century 21 is playing host to a first ever US sample sale from two of Belgium’s juggernauts: Ann Demeulemeester and Haider Ackermann. I was invited to preview the collections before the sale officially opened to the public this Wednesday.

First off I really have to commend the folks at C21 for creating such a beautiful showcase. When I entered the venue I immediately felt a euphoria of shopping inside a high end boutique instead of the usual chaos and madness that a typical sample sale elicits. The merchandise takes up both floors of the C21 Edition space with the majority devoted to Ann Demeulemeester. You can find racks of Haider Ackermann designs on the first floor to the right. The clothing for both designers is organized by color and style. First floor also hosts shoes and accessories from Ann Demeulemeester and this is where we’ll start.
Upon entering the space you are immediately met with display cases filled with belts, gloves, and scarves. A pair of long suede gloves goes for $569. The pretty crochet scarves in purple and black are  $132. Everything is priced as marked with the familiar Century 21 blue tags affixed to each item. Unfortunately the prices are more evocative of a boutique sale versus a sample sale. With only about 60% off what’s a very expensive retail price this sale is not for bargain hunters. The shoes are located on the left side and consist mainly of ankle boots, booties, and sandals. The prices range from $439-$599 while the sizes tend to screw towards 39/40. There are no stacks of boxes so whatever is on display is all that’s available. Belts range from $255-$400. Some of the more affordable items are the  Josephus Thimister sandals for $172.

Up on the second floor you can find a variety of clothing. Some of the highlights include an embellished vest, rabbit fur coats in black, silver, and white as well as a gorgeous blue silk bomber jacket. Most of the clothing consists of single unique pieces, at best there might only be 1-2 of each style. The sizes are also on the small side (36-40) with an occasional 42/44.

Highlights from Haider Ackermann included a tweed jacket for $1099, Raccoon lined sleeveless coat for $4549, open leather jacket in burgundy for $1629, cropped trousers with ankle lace up $639, and a laser cut vest with zipper detail $559. I was told that menswear completely sold out on the first day of the preview. Kanye’s stylist must have woken up early for that one 😉
