Sample Sale-ing In The Garment District

With so many sample sales currently taking place in the Garment District I wanted to see just how many I could squeeze into three hours (the answer is 6). From handbags to shoes, jewelry, and gowns there was something to satisfy even the most discerning bargain shopper.

Carlos Falchi
209 West 38th St. Suite 1201
June 15 – June 18
10:00am – 6:00pm
Bags, bags, bags! I started my shopping adventure at the Carlos Falchi sample sale. Big thanks to The Fashion Sherlock for the early head up 🙂 While the sale has been running since last Thursday (VIP), I was curious to see what was on offer.

Inside the designer’s showroom I found neatly organized handbags arranged by price. Along the left wall were microfiber totes with matching cosmetic cases priced at $100. On the opposite wall were small handbags at $100-$200. On the large table in the middle of the room were exotic clutches at $300-$600. Some of the larger Python handbags along the back wall were $1,000 and above. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They even offered to create a custom made handbag based on my own specifications (this won’t be cheap). There were also two boxes of samples ($50-$200) but I found most of the offerings to either be in such a bad shape or the style so old and outdated that it made them a total skip.

microfiber totes $100

exotics/python $1,000+

clutches $300+

samples $50 and under
BOTTOM LINE: If you’re in the market for exotic/python clutches or would relish an opportunity to create a custom bag then head on over. Otherwise skip. The microfiber totes can be found for under $50 during Century 21 sales and other mid-range styles can be had cheaper online.

Fabiola Pedrazzini
209 West 38th St. Suite 1211
Weekdays all of June
10:00am – 5:00pm

Located on the same floor was another sample sale dedicated to handbags. Fabiola Pedrazzini’s exquisite designs were on offer inside the small showroom space. The sale has been running for a few weeks now and is expected to last through the end of the month. While the selection was rather small there were plenty of style to choose from. Bucket bags, crossbodies, clutches all made from authentic Italian leather. Prices started at $80 for samples but much like with Carlos Falchi I would advise to skip that box, they were all damaged/stained and the cost to repair would be more than the bag itself. A member of the sales staff was kind enough to inform me that they have started mark downs and everything is now much lower than the ticked prices (around $120-$180).

I was not very familiar with this label when I attended the sale yesterday but once I came home and started writing my recap I noticed that their website now redirects to Facine (a NYC brother/sister label) Their bio mentions that they collaborated with Fabiola Pedrazzini and now rebranded themselves as Facine. So my question is who actually designs the bags? It was Fabiola who won numerous awards in 2011. I’ll try to get in touch with the showroom tomorrow and find out more.

BOTTOM LINE: I really liked the design, quality and craftsmanship of many of these bags but honestly I am very confused about the whole Facine thing.

Bettye Muller
209 West 38th St. Suite 505
Weekdays in June
10:00am – 6:00pm

Down on the fifth floor, inside Linda Richards’ showroom was a small selection of Bettye Muller sample shoes. I mean it was a tiny selection, maybe 20 shoes total. Although some styles, like the closed espadrilles on the lower left shelf had extra inventory and were priced at $35 (there is a fit issue with this style that will need to be corrected by a cobbler) while the rest of the shoes were $50. Sizes were primarily 37s with a few 36s and 38s sprinkled in.

I fell in love with these white lace-up sandals and absolutely had to have them (they were the last pair).
BOTTOM LINE: Skip, unless you are a 37 and absolutely love one of the styles in the above photo.

Botkier and She+Lo
148 West 37th Street, 14th Floor
June 15 – June 19
8:30am – 6:00pm
The rain was pouring outside but up on the 14th floor it was pouring bags! Inside their huge showroom there was a sea of Botkier and She+Lo bags. Each table and rack was dedicated to a particular style with its own price list.

$40 sample clutch

Along the walls on the left side were Botkier sample handbags with prices ranging between $40 – $175. There was a gamut of colors and styles to choose from and I noticed price reductions on specific sample styles.

The right side of the venue was dedicated to She+Lo with both sample and stock handbags. This is a relatively new brand from the creators of Treesje.

BOTTOM LINE: This is a great opportunity to stock up on a variety of handbags at accessible prices. While the discounts are not quiet where I would prefer, with this wide a selection it really is worth checking out the sale.

Sachin & Babi
132 West 36th Street, 9th Floor
June 16 – June 18
9:00am – 6:00pm
Do you have a wedding party or black tie event to attend this summer? Then you may want to head to the Sachin & Babi sample sale ASAP. When I arrived the showroom was buzzing with the after work crowd, all eagerly shopping for designer gowns.

The sale featured stock dresses/jackets/tops/bottoms at $75 – $225 as well as $40 – $75 samples, located along the back walls. The staff was doing their best to keep things organized but samples and stock were constantly getting mixed in together. The easiest way to spot a sample is to see whether there is a size listed on the label. If no then you got yourself a sample. Also worth noting that there was no dressing room so dress appropriately.

 dress $225

 sample dress $40

I was surprised to see pillow cases from Ankasa. At $20 they were a real bargain but if you’ve been reading my blog then you know that Kim Seybert will probably keep me stocked for years to come!
 Ankasa pillow cases $20
BOTTOM LINE: If you have a special event in the near future then run! Dresses and gowns were going quick, especially the samples.

Nanette Lepore
225 West 35th Street, 5th Floor
June 16 – June 18
9:00am – 7:00pm
Nanette Lepore‘s sample sales are always a big hit in my book. I love her chic feminine designs and her color palettes are among my favorites. Located inside the designer’s showroom in the Garment District the selection was staggering. There were countless racks that would require at least 3 or more hours to comb through properly. There was everything from the current season selection to new and past samples.

Also available at the sale were shoes, swimwear, jewelry, handbags, and accessories.
 jewelry $3-$20
One of the most overlooked things at the sale were the slips. With 4 for $10 this is an amazing bargain. At previous sales they went for $5-$10 each. What? You think a slip is something only your granny wears. Next time you pick up a bunch of unlined Bottega Veneta skirts for $25 or see through Valentino  dresses for under $100, instead of running to the Rack or C21 and forking over $25-$40 for a slip you’d be happy you stocked up at Nanette Lepore. This is the voice of experience speaking 😉
BOTTOM LINE: Go! Run! The selection is so abundant that it’s impossible not to find something. Whether it’s to get a head start on autumn coats or pick up a few summery dresses there is so much to choose from.
