This week the CFDA Fashion Incubator for emerging designers is holding a special two day holiday sample sale. CFI is a business development program designed to support the next generation of fashion designers by providing low cost studio space, mentoring, business seminars, and networking opportunities over a course of a two year period. The sale features 8 of the 10 Incubator designers: Misha Nonoo, Isa Tapia, Kaelen, Nomia, Orley, A Peace Treaty, Katie Ermilio, and Lucio Castro.
Located on the third floor, the sale is set up similar to an indoor flea market with many designers displaying their goods in the hallway outside their respective showrooms. The one exception being Misha Nonoo, who’s merchandise could be found inside her showroom. If you’re a regular reader of this blog you might know what a big fan I am of Misha’s designs so I was very excited to learn that she would be part of this sale. I also happened to arrive at the most opportune time as one of the staffers just slashed all the sample prices! They are now the lowest I have seen at any Nonoo sample sale: $25 tops, $30 sweaters and skirts, $40 dresses and blazers. The selection of true samples was fairly small and consisted of one and a half racks. Sizes were either 0 or 2 but there were a couple of size 4-8 pieces. A few standouts included Meta Oxford
knotted shirts in white and black ($25), Emmi dress
($40), Caftans ($30) from the W Hotels/CFDA Wet Deck Capsule Collection
, and Eva Wool Coat
. The sale also featured several racks of Fall/Winter merchandise like coats, furs, and knitwear discounted 40% off original prices. The extremely helpful staffer that I spoke to mentioned that they are fairly flexible on pricing and depending on each individual piece can go lower than the aforementioned 40% off.
Next up was Isa Tapia and her gorgeous shoes. All merchandise was set up outside the showroom and included five boxes of sample shoes priced at just $25! If you are size 36.5 or 37 you just hit the jackpot. There were so many styles including sandals, pumps, heels, and even booties. If you wear a larger size, fret not because there were plenty of overstock shoes that come in a box with dust bags. Stock shoes were priced by style with prices ranging from $50-$150. Some of the highlights included Juliette booties
, Francis ankle-tie pumps
, Estrella pumps
, Juan flats
, and Alma Heart sandals
Further down the hallway you can find Orley silk ties ($45 or buy 2 get 1 free), scarves and hats ($25), cashmere hats ($95), gloves
($145), and cashmere scarves
($195). Nomia prices started at $20 for shorts and topped out at $125 for outerwear. You can see the entire price list in the photos below. Kaelen prices ranged from $50 for tops and sweaters to $100 for outerwear. S/S ’15 pieces were discounted 20% off original prices and F/W ’15 were 40% off. A Peace Treaty selection consisted of caftans ($35 short, $65 long, $125 extra-long) and scarves. There was also a table with jewelry, each piece individually marked ($50-$250). Since I dropped by right around closing time I didn’t get a chance to check out the offerings from Katie Ermilio or Lucio Castro. I did not see any merchandise in the hallway but its likely that they have simply closed earlier than the other designers.
BOTTOM LINE: This is a great sale and if you’re in the neighborhood, run! If not then it’s definitely worth a trip especially if you wear size 6.5-7 shoes or 0-4 clothes. Tuesday is the last day and Misha Nonoo has already started her markdowns so it’s possible other designers will follow suit. While you’re in the Garment District you can also check out the outdoor holiday market on Broadway (between 39th and 41st St.) featuring great local food selection as well as free samples of Stella Artois cidre and beer that include a complimentary chalice! Happy shopping 🙂
