Semi-Annual Clearance Event At 260 Sample Sale

Wednesday, February 17, 2016

Earlier this week I got word that the organizers at 260 Sample Sale are hosting a special clearance sale at their main location. While no detailed information was provided I was curious enough to brave our craptastic weather (didn't the groundhog say that Spring is coming? Enough with the snow and rain already!) and check out the sale for myself.

Just as I imagined the event turned out to be pretty similar to previous clearance sales (5th Ave | SoHo) held by 260 this past summer. The merchandise was comprised primarily of John Varvatos menswear and shoes. For the ladies there was Barbara Bui apparel, footwear, and accessories along with Roberta Freymann and Velvet by Graham Spencer clothing. Prices were slightly lower compared to last year and started at just $15 for the latter designers while Barbara Bui pieces went as high as $500 for leather and jewelry. Among the most affordable categories were $30 jeans, $50 pants, and $75 shirts. Please consult the price list at the bottom of this post for a complete breakdown. Sizes ranged from 0 to 10 although smaller sizes offered better variety. Printed jeans in particular were predominantly size 25(XS). Overall the selection, while plentiful was not as exciting as what I spotted last summer. There were also Barbara Bui shoes with sizes ranging from 36-40 and prices starting at $40 for flats and $95 for boots. Although there were only a handful of each, most of the stock consisted of $50 heels with just one size per style.

Velvet apparel was comprised of only a handful or racks which could be found in the middle of the venue, a little towards the back. There were lots of lightweight cotton tees and tanks that made me long for warmer days. Roberta Freymann dresses, tunics, shirts, and bottoms were located all the way in the back near the dressing room. I spotted some cute bright patterns and summery prints. Everything was just $15 and a real bargain!

The sale also offered a small selection of accessories like belts, jewelry, ties, wallets, credit card holders, and even a few handbags. I spotted some DVF and Rebecca Minkoff bags on the shelves behind the registers (priced individually around $125-$175). Barbara Bui accessories were all priced as marked while the rest fell into the $10-$20 range. The two necklaces were marked $500 although I saw them for $330 last time but other than that, prices were lower. Another thing to watch out for are signs of damage. Like the cute DVF clutch (in the third photo) which has a huge dent in the back and certainly isn't worth its price.

Last but not least there was a huge selection of John Varvatos for the guys that included Collection and Star USA clothes and footwear. Prices started at $15 for tees/knits and went up to $150 for outerwear and $195 for suits. The merchandise took up the whole left side of the venue. Majority of the stock was made up of blazers/jackets, trousers, and dress shirts. Footwear stretched the length of the space, along the left wall. It was mostly one size per style. Jeans and denim could be found all the way in the back near the women's section.

John Varvatos Star USA shoes $39-$75
John Varvatos jeans $30-$40

BOTTOM LINE: This is the same merchandise that roams from one 260 sample sale to the next and personally I didn't find the selection all that enticing. Nevertheless if you're in the neighborhood and love bright floral prints from Roberta Freymann it might be a good time to stock up on cheap summer apparel. The sale ends on Saturday.
