Saks Off 5th Opens Its First NYC Store

Hello my fellow fashionistas! I know you love shopping as much as I do which is why you’re going to be thrilled to learn that there is a new destination for discount designer deals. This Thursday morning Saks Off 5th officially opened its doors in the heart of New York City (125 East 57th Street). Saks Fifth Avenue’s latest outlet spinoff hosted a special preview Wednesday evening and I had the pleasure of attending.

The preview attracted a huge crowd of eager shoppers and despite its size, the line moved fairly briskly. If the location seemed somehow familiar to some of you that is because Saks Off 5th has taken over Daffy’s (RIP) old space. While I still lament the closing of all of Daffy’s stores several years ago I am happy that there is now another destination for discount designer deals. I ran into so many friends and acquaintances while shopping that I neglected to snap photos of all the awesome Stella Artois bubbly.

This being an opening party there were tasty goodies…
…and photo op opportunities 🙂

A really cool thing that separates this store from all other Saks Off 5th locations is Gilt‘s first ever concept store. Both Gilt and Saks are now owned by the same parent company, Hudson’s Bay, which also owns Lord & Taylor. The store within a store is located on the second floor and every Wednesday at noon you will get a chance to shop Gilt’s online selection in person. For instance this week it was Zadig & Voltaire and next week is supposed to be Shoshanna. There were several racks of apparel featuring the aforementioned Zadig & Voltaire as well as some other designers currently selling on Gilt. If you are unable to find a particular style or need another size, the SAs will be happy to order it for you online. You can also use the iPads near the desk to check out Gilt’s online sales. Shoe and handbag selection was very minimal but I expect that to change based on the type of sales being held each week. You can now also drop off all your Gilt returns at Saks Off 5th locations. Gilt by Appointment is scheduled to launch in May.

Shoes and handbags very limited so far
Once inside I quickly proceeded up the escalator to the ladies shoe section. And my oh my were there a lot of shoes! On either side of the escalator you can see racks of contemporary footwear from the likes of Kate Spade, Vince, DVF, and so many more. Most shoes were discounted by 60%-80% and I spied lots of Kate Spade sandals from $89-$129 as well as $29 flip-flops. These Theresa patent peep toe wedges (reminiscent of Ferragamo) really caught my eye. There were also some cute offerings from Isa Tapia and Ivy Kirzhner.

Huge variety of women’s shoes

For those in search of more high-end brands there was a section specifically dedicated to luxury European designers. I spotted Lanvin, Dolce & Gabbana, Chloe, Bottega Veneta, Giuseppe Zanotti, and yes even Valentino rockstuds. Although to be fair they were severely overpriced at $879 (even with an extra 20% off that everyone who attended the preview was eligible to receive). On average prices were fair but not clearance level. The good news is that according to one of the associates, is that in the future this store will hold the exact same promotions as all the other Saks Off 5th outlets. I know that I’m really looking forward to the next Pink Tags event! But back to the shoes at hand. I saw white YSL Tributes in size 36 for around $300, Bottega Veneta white intrecciato flat sandals $255, Lanvin sandals starting at $125 (but mostly in large sizes). Size 37 selection wasn’t as robust as size 39-40 but then again that’s on par with most department stores. Unless we’re talking sample sales, sizes 37-38 always have a limited variety. Nevertheless I did manage to find something (so as not to leave empty handed lol). I spotted these Sophia Webster Adele slip-on sneakers for about $38 (after discounts) which was cheaper than the sample sale by the way. I would have liked a different style but who knows what the future holds 😉 Meanwhile my mom got these awesome resort ready Dolce & Gabbana Caretto Siciliano flip-flops.

Valentino rockstuds $879 (only 19% off ewww)
Chloe sandals
YSL Tributes $305 Dolce & Gabbana sandals $328
Jimmy Choo $207
Lanvin shoes $125-$250

Handbags and accessories were also located on the same floor. There was Tory Burch, Michael Kors, Zac Posen, Dooney and Bourke, Mario Valentino, and even Karl Lagerfeld‘s eponymous label. Discounts were roughly 40-70% off retail with prices in the $90-$300 range. The more expensive bags could be found in a separate area behind the vintage display cases. There was Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Chloe, and Valentino. A medium rockstud tote was priced at $1,247. Meanwhile the vintage display cases housed some fine Hermès specimens like Birkin, Kelly, and Evelyn bags along with a few jewelry and scarf offerings. Unfortunately they all were excluded from the additional discount (which was valid only during the preview).

Moschino about 70% off
Karl Lagerfeld $115
Chloe handbags in the $1,000 range
Valentino rockstud tote $1,247
Alexander McQueen demanta clutch $399
Vintage Hermes accesseries
Hermes Birkins

One of the best selling items during the preview were not shoes or handbags but rather these adorable fur pom-pom keychains from Adrienne Landau and Fallon & Royce. After discounts they came out to $11-$20 so no wonder everyone was grabbing them left and right. Below are a few things that we bought.

Fur pom-poms $11-$20

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); = id; p = ‘//’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Further back you can find a huge selection of sunglasses from nearly all major designers. Prices were in line with other discount destinations. Burberry frames for $89, Versace for $99, and so on. There was also a decent jewelry selection with the more pricier brands in display cases and cheaper contemporary pieces on freestanding displays. Most jewelry and watches were marked down by 50% off original prices. There were even Gucci and Ferragamo watches but beeing a mega deal finder that I am I’ve seen prices cheaper elsewhere. Among the jewelry displays I saw Alexis Bittar, Effy, Gurhan, Roberto Coin, Ippolita, and more that I just can’t remember right now. They also had some fine gold and silver jewelry.

Versace sunglasses $99
Designer sunglasses $80 and above
Ferragamo and Gucci watches
Alexis Bittar jewelry 50% off
Most jewelry was 50% off retail
Versace scarves $99
Missoni scarves $129+ (can be had waaay cheaper at C21)

The waiting line by the registers had the usual obligatory products to tempt you into spending a few extra bucks. I simply couldn’t resist this collection of mini Jean Paul Gaultier perfumes! Sure I could probably find them cheaper by $1-2 online but I was in the moment! The shelves also housed various perfumes like the aforementioned Gaultier as well as Ferragamo and Burberry. There were lots of skincare products from Bliss, scented soaps, and other creams but I’d stick with TJ Maxx and Marshalls for your discount beauty needs.

Various odds and ends as you wait to pay
Ferragamo Incanto only $20
Scented soaps
The store is now officially open and definitely worth your time. If you are in the neighborhood make sure to stop by and sign up for their More! Insider rewards program to stay up to date on the latest sales and store events. Also remember that every Wednesday Gilt’s concept store will offer a brand new sale to mirror their online offerings. Meanwhile Gilt by Appointment is scheduled to open in May.

I plead the Fifth!
