Mix And Match - Intermix Sample Sale

Tuesday, July 19, 2016

UPDATE: 7/21 Shoes now 80% off, everything else 70%-90% off. 7/20 Blue tag (60% off) items are now 70% off retail.

Here we are in the middle of July, usually a quiet month when it comes to shopping. Boutique sales are winding down, most venues are getting ready to close for summer break and yet we're here talking about a major designer sample sale. More than that, today you'll be faced with a rather tough choice of where to take your wallet. Intermix sample sale officially opens to the public this morning, as does the Zachary Prell menswear sale. The first-ever M.A.C. cosmetics sample sale will open its doors later in the afternoon while Jack Rogers, Thomas Pink, and LXR & Co. sales continue from Monday. To make your life a little easier I scoured the offerings at Intermix so you can decide for yourselves whether this sale is worth your time.

Late last evening I arrived to find a very busy friends and family preview of Intermix's summer sample sale. Stylish shoppers were abuzz with trendy designer pieces and the line to the dressing room was long and slow.  Discounts were pretty straightforward, all items sported color coded tags:

Blue = 60% off | Green (and all shoes) = 70% off | Orange = 80% | Red = 90% off

The sale offered a wide selection of women's apparel, shoes, and accessories such as handbags, scarves, and jewelry. You can find contemporary brands like Ronny Kobo, Elizabeth & James, Rag & Bone, A.L.C. Alexis, as well as Intermix own house label on the racks near the front of the venue. For high-end designers like Derek Lam, Mugler, Pucci, DSquared, IRO, Anthony Vaccarello, etc. head towards the back. Most items were only marked down 60% off retail (blue tags) which does make sense since we're talking about recent collections from S/S '16. Stunning boho-inspired white lace-trim kimono tunic from Derek Lam was $518 (retail $1,295), button down denim dresses $518 (retail $1,295), Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini lace top $310 (retail $775). There were so many great trendy pieces that are sure to up your fashion game by a few notches! Anthony Vaccarello black sheath dress $534 (retail $1,335) is your chance to show off to your friends before the designer's first collection for Saint Laurent hits the stores. Summer ready tops, lacy shorts, flowing skirts, and even swimwear. I saw many fellow shoppers gravitate towards this gorgeous Emilio Pucci one shoulder swimsuit $222 (retail $555). Seasonal apparel wasn't the only game in town. If you're looking to stock up for Fall then you're in luck! I spotted trendy leather jackets from IRO, like this Luiga Moto Leather jacket in yellow and grey for $359 (retail $1,198). Even a single fur coat by Yves Salamon $2,599 (retail $6,498). There were also suede skirts, leather pants, knit blazers, and wool coats. I liked this basic grey Rag & Bone cashmere sweater that was 80% off along with this colorful flower embellished sweater by Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini $ (retail $690). Sizes ranged from XS to L and there was a dressing room with a 10 item limit. While I loved the selection, bottom line is that I simply wasn't as enomored with prices. At 60%-70% off retail most of these items were still substantially high.

Now I'm sure you must be wondering about the 90% off (red tag) items and how come I'm not raving about my major scoops. If you've been reading this blog you know how much I love the 90% discounts and after all I never pay retail! Need be I will turn over every single tag and scour through thousands of pieces to find that one hidden gem but this time there were none to be had. First off, the red tag looks awfully close to the orange tag (which looks more like coral red than orange). Anyway, the few red tag items that I did find were either stained (white skirt with major black stains), damaged (a suede skirt with a big hole from a security sensor, leather pants with giant irreparable rips) or Intermix and other contemporary labels mainly in tiny (0/XS/P) sizes. To be perfectly honest it's not really worth your time looking for the 90% off stuff. If you want to save, just wait for additional markdowns to kick in later this week.

Intermix long/maxi dresses up to 90% off
Nehera cropped Mongolian wool jacket $156 (retail $1,565)
Alexis lace top 90% off
Suede skirt, red tagged, but with hole from security sensor $52 (retail $525)

The sale also offered a nice selection of shoes and accessories. All footwear was marked down 70% off original prices and coukd be found along the left wall. Major designers included Jimmy Choo, Aquazzura, Sergio Rossi, Paul Andrew, Tabitha Simmons, Sophia Webster, Vince, Rag & Bone, and more. Size availability varied by style and designer. A few highlights: Sophia Webster jeweled Piper gem flats $127 (retail $425), Tabitha Simmons perforated lace up Willa flats $208 (retail $695), Paul Andrew yellow Delphi wedges $238 (retail $795), and Aquazzura Tango lace-up sandals $208 (retail $695). Handbags, scarves, and jewelry can be found near the registers. There were some trendy clutches from Clare V. and DVF, a large colorful Pucci tote, as well as cute little bags by See by Chloe and Sara Battaglia.

BOTTOM LINE: The sale is stocked with great trendy apparel and footwear but the discounts still leave much to be desired. $300-$500 for a blouse is a lot of money IMO. The red tagged items proved to be a bust so my advice is so hold out until additional markdowns go into effect.
