Starting this morning Carven
is set to open its doors for the public portion of their second ever US sample sale. The French label made a much welcome NYC debut last April. This week’s sale offers discounts of up to 80% off retail on ready to wear, handbags, shoes, and accessories for women and men. Yesterday evening I stopped by their F&F preview to scope out the deals and found the venue stocked with great selection of Fall/Winter merchandise worthy of a trendy French fashinista’s closet.
Considering the recent announcement that Carven’s creative duo is leaving the company I was hoping for savings akin to this year’s Lanvin sample sale but alas these weren’t blowout prices although the discounts were still rather good. The sale featured apparel from Fall ’13, ’14, and ’15 collections as denoted by the color coded stickers. Most items were individually marked and I truly mean that because nearly everything had its own unique price. I’ll try to generalize as much as I can. T-shirts and basic tops started at $40 and went up to $75 for sweatshirts and $85 for cardigans and most items in the category were under $100. Dresses were priced around $125-$225 with a good selection of office appropriate frocks and some warm weather friendly options. The sale leaned outerwear heavy which is perfect for the cold weather ahead. I spotted wool coats, trench coats, knits, fur-trims, and even a few shearling bomber jackets. Prices were mostly $178-$298 with a few higher priced exceptions such as the aforementioned shearling for $500+ and a sleeveless pink fur piece for $750. There was no dedicated dressing room or rather the space that was used as a dressing room was not curtained off so dress accordingly.
Best deals were among handbags and accessories where I spotted this Malher wallet
with a wrist strap for $60 (retail $221). Small wallets were $40 and medium $50. Most handbags were priced in the $60-$350 price range. There were great standouts like the Malher
crossbody for $175 (retail $448), Pin Fastening Tote
$225 (retail $640), and Large Malher Satchel
$350 (retail $990). While yesterday’s selection was quite modest I have some very good news! The organizers informed me that they are expecting a large shipment of handbags this morning so I wouldn’t worry too much about items selling out too quickly. Other accessories on display included $20 collars (photo #8), hats and gloves, belts $25-$60, and jewelry $15-$35.
Footwear selection consisted of both samples and stock. Prices started at $75 for sandals and averaged around $105-$155. Sizes started at 35 and went up to 41 but oddly enough I did not see a single pair of size 37 and 36 was almost non existent as well. The rest were well represented. Samples could be found on the shelves next to the handbags and ocerstock on and under the table in the middle of the room. There was everything from fashion sneakers to creepers and loafers to sandals, pumps, and even a couple of boots. There was also a small selection of men’s apparel and shoes on the racks closest to the entrance. I linked up a few examples of what I saw in the gallery below.
BOTTOM LINE: If you’re in the market for one of Carven’s signature Malher handbags then you definitely need to check out the sale as soon as you can. A new shipment is expected this morning and prices range between $125-$350. Ready to wear selection also offers a nice variety of edgy yet faminine Parisian looks. There were good footwear options but sadly not all sizes were represented and some shoes showed signs of wear. I am not sure if there will be further markdowns but I’ll definitely keep you updated. The sale runs through Friday.
