UPDATE: 3/24 Now extra 20% off and new arrivals.
Starting today and running through Sunday, Reiss is holding their semi-annual sample sale. The British retailer made its foray into the NYC sample sale scene over a year ago and has since become a hot destination for shoppers eager to stock up on seasonal trends at attractive price points. This week you’ll be able to find apparel, shoes, and accessories for women and men. Discounts on stock merchandise go up to 75% off retail but if you’re lucky to get your hands on the coveted samples you’ll be sure to walk away with some pretty amazing deals. While I was out of town for the first two Reiss sample sales I was determined not to miss this week’s event. Late last evening I stopped by their friends & family portion of the sale and here’s what I found.
The venue was split fairly evenly between men’s and women’s apparel
. Men’s clothing could be found along the left wall and adjoining parallel racks while women’s merchandise was situated in the middle and opposite the registers. Prices started at $50
for women’s cotton tops
and went up to $475
for shearling coats
. You will find several racks of outerwear right as you enter the venue. The aforementioned shearlings were certainly a big showstopper. Lennox
long pastel grayish blue coats retail for $2,435 but right now they’re down to just $475 which is actually over 80% off! Besides shearlings, the outerwear selection
also included $275 wool coats
, $225 trench coats
that retails for $540), and $275 leather jackets
. If you’re ready to say goodbye to winter and instead welcome Spring with a bit of a wardrobe refresh there were plenty of options to choose from. $120 short dresses
and $170 maxis
are great as either an office-appropriate number or something to wear on a date in the park. There were racks upon racks of basic tops, tees, blouses, sweaters, cardigans, and other knits as well as several racks of $70 skirts
and $85 pants
towards the back. Overall I was really impressed with selection
but sadly stock prices left something to be desired
. If you take a look at Reiss’ online sale section you might actually find some of the same exact pieces for less! My rule of thumb when it comes to sample sale is that prices have to be lower than online or department stores. Luckily though there is some saving grace in the form of samples. If you take a look at sample pricing in the photos below things suddenly look much more attractive. Unfortunately for me but luckily for you 😉 the samples were not ready for the preview but if you were among today’s morning crowd I bet you found a few good deals 😀 Sample sizes are 4 and 6
so if this is your size then jackpot! Stock on the other hand offered a full range of sizes from 0 to 12. Separate dressing rooms are available for both ladies and gents and there is a usual 10 item limit. To read about the accessories or men’s selection please scroll down.
Womens shoes can be found all the way in the back, opposite the dressing rooms. There was a nice but small selection of pumps, sandals, and boots. All shoes
were priced at $80
. I highly recommend price checking online
because I’ve seen lower prices at reiss.com. For example the Nicola ankle booties
are $95 online while at the sample sale they’re $145 (retail $340). Tiber laser-cut pumps
are $90 online and $80 at the sample sale which isn’t a huge difference. As far as sizing goes there weren’t that many options per style so you need to be lucky and find something you like in your size. Along the tables near the register and on the adjoining shelves you’ll find women’s handbags
. There was a nice selection of jewelry, belts, scarves, swimwear, and hats.
Menswear can be found all along the left side of the venue. There were racks upon racks of tees, shirts, dress shirts, jackets, blazers, suits, and coats. Prices started a bit lower than women’s with $30 t-shirts and $35 tops and went up to $220 for suits, $295 for leather jackets, and $275 for overcoats. Men’s coat selection was smaller compared to women’s, especially if you’re looking for leather. For those in the market for work appropriate attire there were plenty of choices but again I will say that stock pricing was high and you should compare prices to the online sale selection. $60 shirts, trousers, and jeans are probably your best options in terms of value. Men’s accessories can be found on the table in front of the dressing rooms and footwear all the way in the back next to women’s shoes. All shoes and bags were $80 with some solid functional choices, mostly in darker colors. Other accessories consisted of scarves, gloves, hats, socks, belts, hankies, socks, ties, and bow-ties with prices $10-$40.
BOTTOM LINE: The sale offers a very nice selection of apparel and accessories but sadly the stock pricing isn’t in-line with what I expect from a sample sale. If you’re lucky to find a sample it’s a different story but as far as overstock is concerned my advice is to wait for markdown although I’m not sure if an extra 20% will make much of a difference. The one exception is women’s shearling coats, which at 80% off retail were actually a pretty good deal.
