Spring Worthy Finds At Carven

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the flowers are blooming. What a great time to take a walk along The Highline and check out Carven Spring sample sale. The French label is hosting a two day affair with discounts over 80% off retail at their West side showroom. Prices are lower than at their previous sale and selection includes great pieces from RTW, footwear, handbags, and accessories for women and men.

Yesterday afternoon I stopped by Carven’s friends & family preview and was pleasantly surprised to see that the prices have gone down since their last sample sale. The merchandise consisted of both stock and samples and was organized by collections from Fall, Spring, and Resort ’16 to Spring ’14 and everything in between. Each item was individually marked with clothing prices ranging from $35-$299 although on average most items were around $60-$100. Pieces from the older collections were priced a little be cheaper. For example a sweatshirt dress from Spring ’14 was $61 while a sweatshirt from Fall ’16 was $95. Sizes were available in FR 34-42 (XS-L) and there was no dressing room. Just a designated area with mirrors so be sure to dress accordingly. Racks were organized by collections with newer items on the left and near the windows while older pieces could be found along the right wall. There were some absolute steals, especially on samples. The gorgeous pink coat (photo #15) was only $249. But you should inspect the samples closely as some, particularly the leather ones, had defects. Note the big tear and pen marks on the red leather jacket (photo #17).

Handbags can be found hanging on racks in the middle of the showroom. Prices ranged from $125 to $225. I saw Carven’s signature Mahler and Mercer handbags in red, yellow, and black. There were even more bags on the nearby table. There you will also find wallets and tiny micro bags. Newer season continental wallets were priced at $90 while older ones were $75. Belts with metal hardware were $50 and there was a full box of them. They did have cheaper thin belts for $20 that can be found in the men’s section on the right. Near the registers you’ll find a small selection of jewelry like the statement necklaces with a large round disc ($50-$75), bracelets, cuffs, and pins ($10).

The sale also offered a big selection of shoes in sizes 35 to 40. There was a mix of stock and samples with most sample shoes located on the floor below the clothes racks. The samples were mostly from the runway so sizes ran larger like 40-41 but they were also priced to sell at just $25/$35. Other sizes had samples as well but prices were closer to $50-$70. Much like the RTW shoes were also all individually priced by style. Life would be so much easier for this blogger if there was a set price list but since that’s not the case let’s take a look at some examples: red suede pumps with bow detail $54, same pumps in patent leather $71, gingham print $76, platform sandals with studs $96, black leather sneakers $114, and colorful sequin booties $170.

Menswear was located in the right hand corner. There were plastic bins with dress shirts (round collar $30, pointed color $50), belts ($20), and tshirts while handbags could be found atop the same shelves. Shoes were on the floor below and included sneakers, loafers, and slides. Prices ranged from about $76-$112. Sorry I did not note all the shoe sizes but remember seeing up to size 44. There were several racks of clothing with prices $25 for basic tees and up to $342 for a suede brown jacket.

BOTTOM LINE: The sale runs through Thursday and additional discounts are unlikely. Thankfully this year the prices are lower and you can score some major bargains among the samples.
