Fivestory Summer Sample Sale Has Deals For 90% Off!

Tuesday, August 8, 2017

Starting today, Fivestory is holding a week long sample sale in SoHo. The luxury uptown boutique's off-site sales are famous for good reason and that's because the discounts can go as high as 90% off retail! This year is no exception. You'll find women's high-end designer apparel, shoes, and accessories marked down either 75% or 90% off their original prices. Fivestory carries some of the most coveted names in fashion like Aquazzura, Balmain, Giambattista Valli, Nina Ricci, Gianvito Rossi, Alexander Wang, Acne, and they can all be found at this week's sample sale.

Yesterday evening Fivestory held a Friends & Family preview that also included their newsletter subscribers. If you'd like to have VIP access to their next sale then you better sign up for their emails right now! As I mentioned earlier, all merchandise was split into two categories: items with red dots were marked down 75% off their original prices while blue dot items were 90% off. One thing to keep in mind is that some tags listed only the sale price so you might be in for a surprise at the register. If a deal looks too good then it probably is. In the past I've found shoes and accessories to offer the best value so that is where I started.

You'll find women's shoes all the way in the back. I spotted Aquazzura, Gianvito Rossi, Sergio Rossi, Balmain, Proenza Schouler, Paul Andrew, Nicholas Kirkwood, and Charlotte Olympia amongst others. Wanting the best deal I concentrated on boxes marked with a blue dot, aka the 90% off shoes. Unfortunately for me there was nothing in size 37 or 38 but if you wear 36-36.5 or 40-41 then you could walk away with a pair of Aquazzura wedges for as little as $69. Crazy?! Right! The lucky ladies with a fortunate shoe size were quickly loading up and buying boxes of these amazing shoes. Now for the rest of us with the more popular sizes like 37-39 the selection was still good but it was limited to 75% off discounts. Of course if you've been wanting Aquazzura'a Wild Thing sandals then even 75% off is a great deal. Let's face it you'll never see a size 38 reach discounts that high at a department store.

My next stop was the accessories section, located opposite the coat check, near the registers. As most other shoppers also flocked here in hopes of scoring a great deal on bags or jewelry things got crowded quickly. You had to form a line and wait to be individually helped. Overall I found the handbag selection in particular a bit lacking. Yes, there were a few 90% off bags but some were not in the best condition. Like an MTA clutch with scratches and missing pearl details. A lone Edie Parker clutch was quickly sold, considering it was just $180 after discounts. The bags that really caught my eye were by Myriam Schaefer although the price tags were certainly eye popping. Very reminiscent in style of Hermes Kelly, these bags actually retail for about the same price ($5,000+). Personally it would be a hard sell even at 90% off but they were only discounted by 75% making them $1,408. They also had cute straw bags by Aranaz with prices starting at $50 after discounts. The jewelry in the display cases is definitely worth a look. There was a mix of both costume and find gold, sterling, even diamond pieces. Most of the stellar 90% off items were already taken by the F&F crowd but you can still get lucky as not all jewelry had labels and therefore couldn't be sold yesterday evening.

Over to the side, closer to the registers you'll find a tiny and a I mean tiny selection of home goods. Sterling silver napkin rings came out to around $35 and can make for nice gifts but otherwise there wasn't much to look at as you can see in the photo below. I grabbed the last scarf, a Mary Katrantzou silk twill in a cowboy print. As I'm a big fan of her designs it was a no-brainer for just $18! Eugenia Kim hats were all 75% off with prices well over $100. There were some great wool styles for Fall along with a few summer straw hats.

Finally the rest of the venue was dedicated to women's apparel, organized by style starting with long dresses, skirts, pants, jeans, tops, dresses, and a few jackets and coats. Both blue and red dot items were mixed together so you'll have to do some rummaging through the racks. The higher discount pieces were mostly from older collections and you might even recognize them from past sales. Leonard silk skirt was $103 (retail $1,030), Giambattista Valli cropped print pants $239.50 (retail $2,3950), Rosie Assouline flower stamp culottes $229.50 (retail $2,295), Haider Ackermann tweed jacket $269.50 (retail $2,695), Alessandra Rich beaded gown $556.50 ($5,565), and Anthony Vaccarello zip dress $232.50 (retail $2,325). As you can see the 90% off items were still pretty pricy. The red dot selection included newer and trendier pieces from Balmain, Alexander Wang, Brandon Maxwell, Adam Lippes, and Calvin Klein Collection. Prices ranged anywhere from $175 to as high as $2,750 for some of Balmain's beaded gowns. Most pieces were one-offs with size predominantly small or medium. There is a dressing room available but be prepared for long lines.

BOTTOM LINE: While the sale was smaller compared to previous years you can still do great in the shoe and accessories sections. The staff was unsure whether there'd be any restocking but keep your eyes on social media for any updates! The sale runs through Sunday and I do expect additional markdowns on some of the apparel.

  1. OK so I confess I snapped up the Edie Parker LOL. I was first thru the door with Belle and you really didn't miss anything. It only looked amazing b/c it wasn't your size. They were my size and I wasn't impressed. I did grab one pair of heels I probably didn't need and I found Belle a Self Portrait dress for under $110. Which pair of shoes did you take home?
