Monday certainly proved to be one busy day with that huge Herve Leger sample sale happening in SoHo. My first stop though was in NoMad where 260 Sample Sale is holding a multi-brand beauty event. The sale features: Artis brushes, Cover FX makeup, Dr. Jart+ Korean beauty and skincare as well as ghd hair styling tools. All, save for GHD, are newcomers to NYC sample sales so I was very excited to see what’s available! I’ll be breaking things down brand by brand starting with Artis.
UPDATE: As of this Friday all Artis brushes are extra 50% off but the sets as well as Oval 1 and 6 are sold out. See the new price lists for all four brands here.
For someone who until very recently only ever had two makeup brushes I developed quite an obsession with amassing a “beauty blogger approved” collection. Naturally when I learned that Artis would be part of this sale I got super excited. My blogger friends have been raving about these brushes but the high price points preclude me from buying them in the past. Fast forward to this week and average discounts of 60%, suddenly things look much brighter! Artis brushes usually retail from $35 to $90 for individual brushes and as high as $450 for sets. This week you can get them for $18 – $45 individually or $45 – $225 for the sets. So what makes these brushes so special and are they worth the splurge?
If the name Artis doesn’t ring a bell you will certainly recognize the iconic brush shape which is a cross between a Victorian era hair brush and a contemporary toothbrush. The brushes are the brainchild of former M.A.C. Cosmetics VP, Matthew Waitesmith. They’re made of patented CosmeFibre and can cut down your makeup application time in half! There are four styles available at this week’s sale: Fluenta, Elite Mirror, Digit and Elite Smoke. The brushes also come in three variations: Oval, Linear, and Circle and sizes 1/3/6/8/10. Not all sizes are available in every finish and notable absences include the more recent additions like Oval #7 and the palm brushes. I’ve attached this handy guide from Artis that shows you the best uses for each type of brush. I will say that Oval #6 is arguable the most popular one and it’s only available in Mirror finish. There seemed to be abundant stock to last a whole week but if any brush is going to sell out early it’ll be the aforementioned #6 so don’t wait too long!

The sets are not to be overlooked and consist of 3/5/9 brush combos with the 9 piece Fluenta brush set being the priciest at $225 (retail $450). The Digit 5 piece set is $112.50 (retail $185) while 5 piece Mirror set is more discounted at $85 (retake $170). Please consult the price list for a full list of available items and if you want to read about how to use these brushes or see them in action please check out my friend Cat’s blog: Cat’s Daily Living for her detailed and very thorough reviews.
In the middle of the venue, opposite the registers, you’ll find Dr. Jart+ products. The Korean brand was among the first to cross over before the whole kbeauty craze took off like wildfire and is most famous for their BB Cream. This week’s selection includes some of their 2016 holiday sets like: Mask set and Balm set. I was excited to see the Liftra Contour Shaper for only $20 (retail $80) the set was also available for $32 (retail $130). Prices started at $14 for their Beauty Balm BB cream and Every Sun Day sunscreen. Please see the price list for the full list of available products. Sadly the super hot Cicapair and Ceramidin lines were not available (technically the latter was part of one of the sets), neither were the popular Moist Lover Rubber Masks. The only sheet masks at the sale were offered as part of a set.

On tables to the left of Dr. Jart+ you’ll find makeup by Cover FX. The brand is known for their customizable range of makeup products, especially the Enhancer glitter drops. The selection included: contour kits, click sticks, concealer, bronzer, pressed powders, and several makeup brushes. So if Artis shape just isn’t your thing you have options with Cover FX. Discounts were around 60% off retail with the click sticks and contour kits offering the widest selection. The brand is currently selling on Hautelook but the sample sale will save about $3-$4 off those prices plus no need to pay for shipping!

Finally, towards the back of the venue you’ll find ghd (aka Good Hair Day) styling tools like hair dryers and straighteners. Prices started at $49 for products without an original box and went up to $89 for the boxed version. Unfortunately the selection was tiny compared to their last sample sale at 260. They had just two foldable travel hair dryers $49 (retail $99) and the staffers were not sure about restocking. Regular hair dryers and flat irons had slightly better availability. There are lots of cute colors and patterns to choose from, including several limited editions. Flat irons without a box were $49 while the boxed ones were $69 . The sale also offered hair paddle brushes and bags for $10. At their last sample sale, hair straightener prices dropped significantly on the last day but given this year’s limited selection im not sure what will be left by the time extra discounts begin.
BOTTOM LINE: If your makeup brush collection is lacking this sale offers some great non-splurgy options. While the discounts are not quite as amazing as certain other beauty sample sales, many of these brands are newcomers and aren’t always easy to find for more than 50% off. Unless there’s a specific item that you absolute must have I recommend waiting for additional markdowns.
