After almost a whole month of not setting foot inside a sample sale venue it was refreshing to get back into the swing of things. What finally got me out of my slumber were this week’s two very exciting events, both hosted by 260 Sample Sale. While Herve Leger was technically my last stop of the evening I want to start with this epic sample sale in SoHo. The advertised discounts promised savings of up to 90% off retail as well as a huge selection of archival pieces from the last decade! So was there any substance behind the hype and more importantly should you be preparing to spend your lunch hour browsing the racks?
UPDATE: 2/5 Sale extended through February 11th. Now extra 15% off or extra 30% off if you buy 3 or more items.
If Monday’s press preview was any indication you can most definitely expect huge lines. After all what true bargainista can pass up a chance at scoring an iconic Leger bandage dress for 90% off?! So naturally my first instinct was to investigate which items fell into that coveted 90% discount. Everything was highly organized and merchandise split into two pricing categories: simple/basic and embellished. Luckily for us many of the classic dress styles fell into the basic category, meaning you can get a cocktail dress for as low as $210! And yes this does indeed translate into discounts of 90% off in some cases. For example I found a beautiful pointelle dress with a plunging V-neck that retails for $1,990 but I got it for 89% off retail. Embellished cocktail dresses were priced at $340 with many retailing as high as $5,000! Gowns were priced at $295 for simple and $425 for embellished pieces. I saw one dress that retailed as high as $10,000 so if you are in the market for a special occasion dress then this sale is not to be missed. Sadly there is one ounce of bad news 😞, almost all pieces were size Small. There were some Mediums and Large scattered throughout the racks but I’ll be honest, unless you wear S/XS I would not be queing up for what’s bound to be a long and cold wait. It’s worth mentioning though that there are some styles with a bit of a stretch that say a size 6 *cough* like myself *cough* managed to squeeze into but otherwise most dresses do run pretty true to size 😐.
Dresses were organized by color and style: from sleeveless, short and long sleeve, and gowns in the back. The left middle racks held the beaded, embroidered, lace, and other embellished pieces. Along the left wall you’ll find a large selection of tops priced at either $130 or $210. Near the coat check was a small selection of outerwear, including $510 leather jackets and $1,020/$1,360 furs. The stunning Leandra Fringe Jacket really stood out although the price wasn’t much better than online. Finally the most affordable items at the sale were swimsuits, priced at just $40 a piece. Many retail around $500-$600 so you’re looking as some pretty good bargains. The dressing room has a limit of 10 items so be prepared for things to get very crowded and very hot.
BOTTOM LINE: If you wear size Small then you need to be shopping this epic sale! Depending on style you can find pieces for over 90% off retail which pretty much fulfills my personal criteria for a good sample sale. Expect additional markdowns as the sale progresses. The brand just wrapped up a similar sale in LA where final day discounts included an extra 30% off or 40% off if you bought 3 items or more. I’m expecting similar discounts to happen here. Stay warm and Happy Shopping!
